How to Calculate GST (Formulas & Practical Guide)

Formula 1

Add GST (GST Exclusive)

Used when you have the base price and need to add GST tax to determine the total selling price.

GST Amount = (Base Amount × GST%) ÷ 100
Total Amount = Base Amount + GST Amount

Example: ₹1,000 with 18% GST = ₹1,000 + ₹180 = ₹1,180 total.

Formula 2

Remove GST (GST Inclusive / Reverse GST)

Used when you have the MRP or final gross price and need to extract the original pre-tax base cost.

Base Amount = (Total Price × 100) ÷ (100 + GST%)
GST Amount = Total Price - Base Amount

Example: ₹1,180 with 18% GST = ₹1,000 base + ₹180 GST.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between GST Inclusive and GST Exclusive?

GST Exclusive means the quoted price does not yet include tax. You must add the GST percentage to find the final billing price.
GST Inclusive means the displayed price already has GST incorporated into it. The calculator works in reverse to extract the pre-tax base cost and the embedded tax component.

What are CGST, SGST, and IGST?

• CGST (Central GST) and SGST (State GST) apply for intra-state transactions (within the same state). The total tax rate is equally divided (50% to the Central Government and 50% to the State).
• IGST (Integrated GST) applies to inter-state sales (between two different states) and goes entirely to the Central Government.
