Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Is interest on FD and RD taxable?
Yes, interest earned on Fixed and Recurring Deposits is added to your total income under 'Income from Other Sources' and taxed according to your applicable income tax slab. Banks deduct TDS (10%) if interest exceeds ₹40,000 per year (₹50,000 for senior citizens).
Can I break my FD or RD before maturity?
Yes, premature withdrawals are permitted by most banks, but they generally attract a penalty of 0.50% to 1.0% deduction on the effective interest rate for the period the deposit was held.
